Keep your domain when you switch to OhhWells

Your domain stays yours when you switch website builders. How to point it at your OhhWells site and avoid downtime.

Last updated October 16, 2026

Your domain, the web address people type such as yourbusiness.com, stays yours when you switch to OhhWells. OhhWells does not sell domains. Your domain stays with the company you bought it from, and you point it at your OhhWells site. Connecting your own domain needs a paid plan.

Pointing is not the same as transferring

  • Pointing changes a setting so your web address opens your new site. This is all you need to do.
  • Transferring moves your domain's registration to a different company. You do not need this to use OhhWells.

Before you start

  • Your OhhWells site is finished and published on its free ohhwells.site address.
  • You have read every page on your phone.
  • You know which company your domain is registered with, such as Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy or Namecheap.
  • You have the login for that company.

Steps

  1. Upgrade to a paid plan. Your own domain is part of the paid plan.
  2. Add your domain in OhhWells. Go to Domain Settings and enter your web address. OhhWells shows you the records to copy.
OhhWells Site Settings page with Website > Site Settings highlighted in the left menu, the Domain tab highlighted, and the “+ Custom Domain” button highlighted on the Yoga Studio site card
Go to Website > Site Settings > Domain, then click + Custom Domain on the site you want to connect.
  1. Open your domain company's DNS settings. DNS is the address book that tells the internet where your website lives.
  2. Add the records from OhhWells. Replace the old website records. Leave any email records, called MX records, exactly as they are.
  3. Wait for the change to spread. This often takes under an hour and can take up to 48 hours.
  4. Check your web address. Open it on your phone. When it shows your OhhWells site, the switch is done.
  5. Cancel your old website plan. Keep your domain renewal switched on. The website plan and the domain are billed separately at most companies.

If your domain was bought through Wix or Squarespace

You can leave the domain registered there and still point it at OhhWells. Cancel only the website plan, not the domain. If you would rather hold the domain somewhere independent, transfer it to a domain company first, then point it.

Common questions

Will my website go down when I switch builders?

No. Your old site keeps showing until the DNS change takes effect, then your new site shows instead. Finishing your OhhWells site before you point the domain is what prevents a gap.

Do I have to transfer my domain to OhhWells?

No. OhhWells does not hold domains. You keep yours where it is and point it at your site.

Can I buy a domain from OhhWells?

No. Buy your domain from any domain company, then connect it to your OhhWells site.

Will my business email keep working?

Yes, as long as you leave your email records (MX records) untouched when you change your website records.
